Asia Dorsett, an 11th grader at Southern Lee High School (SLHS), is a dedicated and multi-talented student who thrives both on and off the field. She is an active member of both the cheerleading and track teams, sharing that she loves both sports equally and doesn’t have a favorite. Asia is someone who truly embodies the spirit of SLHS, and her passion for her school and teammates shines through in everything she does.
One thing that Asia loves about SLHS is the supportive and welcoming environment created by the teachers. She appreciates how they make the school feel like a second home, offering care and guidance to all students. If Asia could introduce a new rule in sports, it would be to allow cheerleaders to “battle” each other, showcasing their competitive spirit and skills in a fun, engaging way.
As a proud member of the school community, Asia shows her Cavs pride by regularly wearing SLHS apparel and spreading the word about upcoming sporting events. Before each game, she has a meaningful pre-game ritual: she takes a moment to pray, grounding herself and focusing on the game ahead.
The most valuable lesson Asia has learned throughout her time at SLHS is the importance of consistency. She believes that staying consistent and working hard each day is key to improving and getting better, whether on the field or in the classroom. One of Asia’s favorite inspirational quotes comes from Psalm 23, which reminds her to stay focused and confident no matter the challenges she faces.
Despite the ups and downs of high school life, Asia has faced some unusual advice, like the suggestion to "give up" during a lesson on time management. However, she didn’t let it discourage her. Instead, she used it as motivation to persevere and refine her skills in managing her time more effectively.
When it comes to mental health, Asia takes care of herself by listening to music and enjoying relaxing bubble baths. These moments of self-care help her unwind and recharge, allowing her to stay balanced amidst the demands of school and sports. She has also grown to love cheerleading more as time has passed, maturing both in her skills and her appreciation for the sport.
When asked about a teacher who has made a lasting impact on her, Asia immediately mentions Mrs. Charles. She describes Mrs. Charles as understanding, caring, and loving, and appreciates how the teacher uses various methods to ensure that every student succeeds. Whether in the classroom or out in the field, Asia handles pressure with grace by taking deep breaths and trusting in her ability to handle any challenge.
Asia’s positivity, dedication, and willingness to help others are qualities that make her an inspiring figure at Southern Lee High School. She is a prime example of how students can balance academics, sports, and extracurricular activities, all while maintaining a positive and grounded attitude.
