Social Worker

At Southern Lee High School, we are fortunate to have a dedicated and caring social worker, Sara Allen, who is committed to supporting our students and staff alike. Since joining our team in October 2023, Sara has been an invaluable resource in the Student Services department. Her extensive background and caring approach make her an essential part of our school community.

Background and Education

Mrs. Allen journey to Southern Lee High School began after an extensive career in education and social work. She previously worked at Lee County High School for over 17 years and had experience in almost every school in the county, as well as at Central Office. Mrs. Allen holds both a Bachelor's in Social Work and a Master's in Criminal Justice, both earned at East Carolina University (ECU), a place that holds special significance for her. While initially drawn to ECU because her husband was in business school there, she later returned because of her love for the area and the university.

A Day in the Life at SLHS

As the social worker at Southern Lee High School, Sara is always ready to help students navigate personal challenges, providing them with guidance, resources, and emotional support. She enjoys greeting students with a smile, whether on campus or around town. She believes in maintaining a supportive and welcoming environment for all, often reflecting on the importance of fostering a positive school culture.

Mrs. Allen's motto for social work sums it up best: “Social Work is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re going to get, but it’s always an adventure!” Each day brings its own unique challenges, but Mrs. Allen tackles them with enthusiasm and professionalism, ensuring students are well-supported through whatever they may face.

Favorite Things and Personal Insights

When Mrs. Allen is not busy helping students, you might find her enjoying one of her favorite hobbies—reading. Whether it's a thrilling novel on her Kindle or a relaxing afternoon with a good book on her back porch, Mrs. Allen values time to unwind and recharge. She also loves to travel, with the mountains being her ideal vacation spot. And if you’re looking for something sweet, Mrs. Aleen's favorite treat is a cupcake from C-Cups Cupcakes, a local favorite!

Mrs. Allen also has a special fondness for her pet, Rosy, a French Bulldog who thinks she’s royalty. While Mrs. Allen may not be a huge sports fan, she can certainly sing along to many songs—"Friends in Low Places" by Garth Brooks always takes her back to her high school days in 1991.

Advice for Parents and Students

For parents of freshmen, Mrs. Allen offers some great advice: "READ the handbook, ask questions, and get to know your child's teachers and counselor. High school is totally different from middle school." She encourages students to seek out support when needed and reminds them that the school community is always here to help.

Looking Forward

Mrs. Allen's ultimate goal is to retire in the mountains, but for now, she is dedicated to supporting Southern Lee’s students in any way she can. Whether she's helping a student navigate a tough situation or offering words of encouragement, Mrs. Allen is committed to making a positive impact on the lives of our students.

Her experience, compassionate nature, and commitment to service make her an incredible asset to our school community. We’re thankful to have Sara Allen as part of our Southern Lee family!
