The North Carolina Governor’s School is a four-week residential program for proficient and talented high school students. It incorporates academic disciplines, the arts, and one of the kind courses on each of their two campuses.

Students who attend Governor's School are nominated by their school or school system and selected on the basis of grades, test scores, an application essay and, for arts students, or an audition. Students are accepted for a primary course of study in which they will spend most of their class time. This includes the following: English, Spanish, mathematics, natural science and social science; artistic areas of art, choral music, dance, drama, and instrumental music.

Below are a few comments from senior Olivia O’Shaughnessy, who attended Governor’s school last summer.

“I attended Governor's School West this summer in the math discipline and it was one of the best experiences of my life. Every individual, students and instructors, wanted to be there and was excited to learn new ways of approaching their area. It was truly refreshing to be in a community full of like minded people who had a passion for something that is hardly sought after.

I am speaking about the subject of math but they also had areas such as English, natural science, social science, theater, chorus, instrumental music, visual arts, Spanish, and dance. All of us being together helped facilitate more rounded thinking and taught me so much about these different subjects. Every person there was so talented and it was amazing to see their work through performances, presentations, and concerts.

Governor's School brought people from every corner of North Carolina together. This showed me how diverse our one state is and how much it has to offer. I have made long lasting friends that though they will be hard to see because they are so far away, I will never forget and I cherish the memories we had together. The instructors were also brilliant individuals who had such a passion for what they were sharing and made the experience so much more fun. Overall, the summer I spent at Governor's School was one of the best summers of my life and truly re-sparked my interest in learning. “
