“My journey is a testament to resilience, determination, and the power of education to transform lives. Born in Barranquilla, Colombia, I faced challenges early on, including being separated from my parents at a young age. Raised by my grandparents and aunts, I was surrounded by love. My family instilled in me the value of education, with my aunts serving as role models, having graduated from prestigious universities.
Immigrating to the United States at the age of eight, I confronted new challenges. Initially placed in ESL (English Second Language) classes, I navigated the educational system with determination, unaware of the importance of exiting ESL. Financial constraints were ever-present, with me beginning to work at a young age to support myself and help my family.
My ambition crystallized during a pivotal moment in high school when I served as an interpreter for my grandfather's heart surgeon. Inspired to become a cardiologist, I embarked on my educational journey, initially enrolling in a technical school for Medical Information Management. Despite setbacks and misguided advice, I remained steadfast, ultimately earning my Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Crime Scene Investigation.
My path was marked by twists and turns, including the necessity of relocating to North Carolina and traveling hours back and forth to attend my corporate job. Despite setbacks, I remained resilient, securing my U.S. citizenship and pursuing further education, earning a Master's degree in Project Management while working as a Teacher Assistant and repatriating deceased individuals to their native countries.
My commitment to education led me to become an ESL teacher, leveraging my own experiences to support and empower my students. As the ESL Department Head at Southern Lee High School, I go above and beyond, advocating for my students, collaborating with various departments, and engaging with parents and the community.
Through my journey, I underscore the importance of providing targeted support and resources for Latino students, acknowledging their unique challenges and cultural backgrounds. My story is a testament to the transformative power of education and the resilience of the human spirit in overcoming adversity.”
