Governor's School Selfie

"Just the question, “How did your experience at NC Governor's School prepare you for college?” jogs my memory with informal lectures and unforgettable conversations. I was admitted to the discipline, or Area I, of Visual Art, while also participating in supporting classes such as the Mental Health and Wellbeing instruction and Philosophy class in the summer of 2023.

Throughout my supporting classes, I found myself in comfortable and challenging discussions. For example, in my Mental Health and Wellbeing class, my instructor blindfolded us and sat us down in a small group on the first day of class. I had no idea who these people were or their background. Slowly, our group began to talk about who we were individually, and each of us expressed interest in the discussion. For the last ten minutes of class, we were not allowed to talk but just observe who we were talking to. This taught me that going into life by judging someone based on their physical appearance is not always valid for how they reflect their personality.

Additionally, in my philosophy class, we conversed on an intellectual level regarding the process and psychological development of life and society. One of our assignments was to make a short film about how reality can be driven in multiple ways. So, my group and I went on a Maxtrix overlook and designed the dialogue, the settings, and the overall plot. This opened my eyes to how reality is only how one perceives it, meaning having a better or more positive outlook on one’s future will motivate a greater outcome. Last but not least, curiosity was woven with creativity in the visual arts classroom.

I particularly enjoyed our art gallery for the entire campus, video making, and performance art pieces. I learned how art can be a tool for changing or enhancing perspectives. Overall, NC Governor’s School unlocked an unsheltered lens on my future as a young adult because I acquired a wealth of practical and useful tools to use throughout my college life and career."
