Who said that you can't go back? Robert Newby has been working in Lee County Schools for 31 years, but most recently spent the last two years as the Principal at East Lee Middle School, where he was chosen as Lee County Schools' Principal of the Year last year. Newby took over at his alma mater, Lee County High School as principal in July and has quickly adjusted to the new role. It is familiar territory for Mr. Newby, having served at Lee County High as an assistant principal prior to moving to East Lee, but it is a little different this time.
Take a few minutes to hear from Robert Newby as he tells us about the transition back to Lee County High School and how he feels like he is settling into the next chapter of his great career.
1) What was it about this new opportunity that drew you to it?
The thing that drew me back to Lee County High School was this has always been home for me. I am a product of Lee County Schools and I graduated from Lee Senior High School. I also count it an honor to lead one of the best high schools in the state. I know quite a few students in the 9th and 10 grade, because I was their principal at East Lee Middle School. I remember quite a few of the senior class they were freshman when I was an Assistant Principal at Lee County High School.
2) What has been the most surprising thing about your new role?
There is nothing surprising about coming back to high school. All students will be students and they will only do what we the adults allow them to do. Most of the students are doing everything we ask in and out of the classroom. I love what I do and the opportunity to interact with the students, staff, and families at Lee County High School.
3) What has been the most challenging adjustment to your new building and role?
The most challenging adjustment has been making sure that I provide all students with the best education that I can so they will be prepared for a changing society after graduation.
4) What has been the most encouraging thing that you have found in your first few weeks at LCHS?
The most encouraging thing that I have found since being named as principal at Lee County High School is hearing students and staff say that the school atmosphere is good and a lot of them are glad that I am here. I am my hardest critic, but knowing that I am making a positive difference in the lives of everybody on the campus of Lee County High School is wonderful.
